Q IC Contact Application and Analysis Paper This assignment asks that you write a paper to increase your own efforts at achieving intercultural sensitivity and encourage you to learn about different cultures, individuals, and groups and apply relevant concepts/theories from the class and your text to discuss and explain the relevance and importance in the “real world.”. Essays are assigned to encourage you to reflect on your personal experiences with intercultural communication as you proceed through this course. What new understanding about yourself have you gotten now that you have taken this course Format: Length 4–5 pages; a typewritten, well-proofread, APA style analytical paper, including a cover sheet and reference page. Essays are graded on 1) your ability to apply theories, ideas, and terms from class reading and discussion; 2) clarity and articulation of these ideas; and 3) Incorporate a minimum of 3 academic sources and APA and references. Choose ONE Between these Three Options: 1) Attend an unfamiliar cultural event. (can do in groups) You will have the opportunity to participate in, visit, engage in, celebrate, and/or observe different cultural activities available in our area and summarize your experience and reactions to the event; preferably making specific references to concepts from Understanding Intercultural Communication and from class. The purpose of this assignment is to help you learn about a cultural system that is different from yours through reading and through interactions with members of that cultural group. Drawing from theories, ideas, and concepts covered in our readings, write about your intercultural interaction. Discuss the experience. The experience should provide you with an opportunity to explore and discuss the themes of this course. How does the culture see itself in relation to other cultures? How are values enacted/reflected/communicated within the culture? How is this similar to or different from your own experiences? What are the basic foundations of the culture? Be sure to relate theory, terms, articles, and themes from class! Cite all sources. It is recommended to research, call ahead, and arrange for your visits. You wouldn’t want to go on a day that they are closed or can’t get a tour, etc. Some suggestions of things to do or see: ? Museums ? Temples, Synagogues, and Mosques ? Festivals (dates may change) ? Other activities o Visit Korea Town, Little Saigon, Little Tokyo, Little Armenia, etc. Observe the shops, restaurants, and patrons. Interview one native-born individual about their home country and what it has meant to come to the U.S. o Visit an elderly home care facility. o Attend a religious service/ceremony for a religion that is not your own. If you are uncertain if it would be a good participation event, please ask! If you have any transportation difficulties, please speak with me! Please note: Going to a bar or ethnic restaurant does NOT constitute a cultural event. Grading criteria: Choice of event/ Description of location/event with a demonstration of cultural understanding / Use of course concepts and application of them to the event and personal observations / Insight as to how this location/event represents the main culture it is from (outside research to support claims required)/ Application of new knowledge from experience to future interactions with members of that culture / Writing technique, spelling, grammar, punctuation, use of citations. 2. Comparing Own Cultural/Ethnic Values and Communication Norms (can work in partners) This assignment asks you to explore the potential effects of the cultural values of your own cultural/ethnic group and the communication norms of a selected other cultural/ethnic group on potential culture shock encounters between you and members of that other culture. How have your values changed/adapted/reinforced over time? What influences them? For the paper, you are to select another culture or cultural group (friend, colleague, romantic partner, or just about culture are just curious about) and research the cultural and communication norms and patterns that are dominant in that culture. You will also need to assess your own cultural/ethnic values and communication patterns and determine the degree to which you are a “typical” or “atypical” member of your culture or cultural group. After you have completed both of the above, you are ready to write your paper. The paper should identify and describe the most significant cultural value dimensions and communication norms that you believe would influence your intercultural communication with members of the culture or cultural group you have selected. Your explanation and analysis should suggest how cultural values and communication norms might lead to intercultural misunderstandings and how they might be managed competently or flexibly. Let me emphasize that the paper is not simply a description of the cultural values and communication norms of another culture. Rather, it should focus on the comparative analysis and the intercultural communication implications of the two cultural groups. You should use either Hofstede’s cultural value dimensions or Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck’s value orientation patterns (see Chapter 3; see also Chapter 5) as the theoretical framework for this comparative analysis. Browse ahead to Chapters 6 and 7 to help you to get some ideas on the communication norms/patterns section. If you’re interested in ethnic diversity and difference issues in the U.S. culture, consult Chapter 4 on cultural and ethnic identities and apply some of the concepts. A possible outline of your paper might look something like this: I. Two cultural profiles: Describe the two cultures selected and explain your selection interest. II. Cultural values analysis: Own culture versus the comparative culture + relevant examples III. Important verbal and nonverbal communication norms/patterns: Between the two cultures IV. Intercultural communication implications: From misunderstanding to understanding V. REFERENCES: Source cites, use a minimum of three to five credible sources. GRADING CRITERIA: Well-organized paper format / breadth and depth of research + clear explanation / connection between ICC theory and application / informative analysis and new insights gained / persuasive and cogent writing style. 3. Movie/Documentary Review Paper. This assignment asks you to apply three key concepts from any chapter in the textbook to one of the offered documentaries or approved film. Select a feature-length film or documentary that reflects ICC concepts. Watch the film, take note of the communication exchange that occurs between the characters in the film, reflect on the overall meaning of the film, and then select two key episodes from the film that have a strong impact on your viewing experience. Use these two episodes in your analytical movie review assignment. Ideally, the two episodes you pick should have some fascinating parallels or contrasts. I. Movie synopsis: Provide a brief summary or the main plot line and the key characters of the movie. II. Episode 1 + analytical concepts: Explain why you have selected this particular episode for analysis; provide a brief summary of the episode. Introduce and define the three major concepts you will be using to analyze this episode (and indicate what chapter they are from). Use these three concepts to analyze the episode with explanatory depth. Feel free to use specific dialogue, nonverbal gestures, and examples from the episode. III. Episode 2 + analytical concepts: Explain why you have selected this particular episode for analysis; provide a brief summary of the episode. Use three ICC concepts (they can be the same concepts from the Episode 1 analysis) to analyze the episode with explanatory depth and interpretation insights. Feel free to use specific dialogue, nonverbal gestures, and examples from the episode. IV. Intercultural/interethnic communication IMPLICATIONS: Please note any meaningful differences and similarities between the two episodes in relationship to your analytical concepts and present your interpretive findings in a systematic manner. IN CONCLUSION: What are your overall evaluations of the film? Favorable? Or unfavorable? Would you recommend the film to others who want to learn about ICC obstacles, challenges, and/or vibrant richness? If you were the director of the film, would you approach the film (or the ending) differently? Would you create an ICC movie sequel? Conclude and stretch your creativity and imagination. V. REFERENCES: Full citation of the film + source cites from the UIC3 textbook. GRADING CRITERIA: Well-organized paper format / breadth and depth of interpretations + rich examples used / tight connection between ICC concepts, explanation, and analysis / inspiring ideas, originality, and new insights gained/persuasive and cogent writing style.
